Jonty Hurwitz is a British South African sculptor, engineer and scientist born in Johannesburg in 1969. He holds a Guinness World Record for the smallest sculpture of a human form — a nano-scale portrait measuring 80 × 100 × 30 micrometers, created using multiphoton lithography. A trained electrical engineer (University of the Witwatersrand, Signal Processing), his work has been published in Advanced Materials, Leonardo (MIT Press) and ACM Transactions on Graphics, with over 700 academic citations and an h-index of 11. BBC art critic Estelle Lovatt has said: "If Leonardo da Vinci were alive today, he would have been doing what Jonty is doing. He would have been using algorithms." Each of his works carries two parallel descriptions: an artistic interpretation and a scientific explanation — reflecting his identity as both artist and scientist. He has co-founded Wonga.com (as CTO), Statpro, and Daizy (AI research). His work explores anamorphosis, observer-dependent reality, nano-scale sculpture, and the intersection of mathematics, physics and human perception.
